The NFL is running it back with Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets kicking off the 2024 Monday Night Football schedule.
Rodgers and the Jets will take on Brock Purdy and the reigning NFC champion San Francisco 49ers at Levi's Stadium on Sept. 9.
Jets fans will be hoping for a more positive result this time around. Rodgers' first Monday night game for the team ended after four snaps when he tore his Achilles tendon against the Buffalo Bills in last year's opener.
Even though the Jets were able to pull out a 22-16 overtime win in that game, the celebration was short-lived because they were back in quarterback purgatory after an offseason of incredible hype.
Head coach Robert Saleh recently told reporters that Rodgers will have no restrictions when organized team activities begin May 20.
The Jets took steps this offseason to give Rodgers more protection. They signed Tyron Smith, traded for Morgan Moses and drafted Olu Fashanu with the No. 11 overall pick to boost their offensive line.
Rodgers will need that help going into his age-40 season and coming off a significant injury.
On the other side of the field, the 49ers will look to pull themselves back up this season after a 25-22 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 58. They have advanced to the NFC Championship Game four times in the past five years but are still trying to win the franchise's first Lombardi Trophy since the 1994 season.
Barring an unexpected trade of either Deebo Samuel or Brandon Aiyuk, the 49ers will bring back all 11 offensive starters from last season. Purdy finished fourth in MVP voting in his first full season as their starting quarterback. Christian McCaffrey led the league in rushing yards (1,459), yards from scrimmage (2,023) and tied for the league lead in total touchdowns (21).
Rodgers has won four of his last five regular-season starts and owns a 6-3 overall record against the 49ers in his career.
